ALUMNI: WAYS OF GIVING

Some alumni have asked for a reminder of what funds are maintained by the Earth & Planetary Sciences Department to assist with your annual giving. In these trying budgetary times the Earth & Planetary Sciences Department is turning, more than ever, to our treasured alumni to help us sustain our strong teaching and research activities. Most of you receive generic fund-raising inquiries from UCSC Development Office each year, which provides a specific opportunity to contribute to the Earth & Planetary Sciences Department. All you need to do is specifically target your donation to an Earth & Planetary Sciences fund in your response. We welcome you to specify that your gift be directed to a particular effort. If you want to leave it unrestricted so that we may best meet the overall needs, direct it to "Earth Sciences General Fund".

There are four funds we are targeting for growth in the near term:

We have three other funds with which you may be familiar. These are going strong and assist well with our meeting some important departmental and students needs.

THE GERALD WEBER AND SUZANNE HOLT FUND: The Gerald Weber and Suzanne Holt Fund interest is currently used to provide summer field camp scholarships for meritorious students, support undergraduate students giving talks or poster sessions at national conferences, the Outstanding TA Award as nominated by students, and the annual Outstanding Undergraduate Award. It may also be used to support other kinds of special student projects.

THE AARON AND ELISABETH WATERS FUND: The interest from the Waters Fund is given as an annual award for the most meritorious Ph.D. thesis proposal (or two) of the year. Many thanks to those of you who gave to this fund during spring and summer of 2001 when we had the matching opportunity from the Dean of Graduate Studies.

THE TEA FUND: Two of our alumni, Dan Orange and Jeff Marshall, sold their Loma Prieta Earthquake slide sets and donated the proceeds to create an opportunity for socialization and interdisciplinary conversation. Faculty and staff rounded out the amount to reach the investment minimum. We provide a tea time weekly throughout the academic year for these gatherings. You are welcome to visit at any time!
