Welcome to UCSC. I hope that this course will be an interesting and useful start to your graduate career in the UCSC Earth and Planetary Sciences Department.
Eart205, Introductory Graduate Seminar, has taken many forms over the last ten years. This has resulted, in part, from the fact that the course is intended to serve several purposes, but also because each faculty member has different ideas as to how the course should be organized and run. My goals for the course are explained on the syllabus and will be discussed in class, but they center around preparing you to function as professional scientists. In order to do this, you need to learn how to read, interpret, discuss, and draw conclusions from scientific and technical documents, particularly the peer-reviewed literature. You will also need to learn how to write and revise scientific documents, and how to present your work and work history in a compelling way.
If you have not done so already, please go the bookstore or copy center and pick up the course reader, which contains much of the reading for the quarter. Other documents will be handed out in class or will be made available in the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department office for you to copy. Please be sure to read assigned documents in advance of their assigned day in class.
Also, please mark your calendars for the Sierra Nevada field trip, 10/5-10/7!
