Assignments: Five writing assignments, described
on the syllabus and discussed in class.
Grades/Evaluations:
50% Attendance, attentiveness, and participation in discussions
50% Writing assignments

Introduce/review of fundamental concepts in the Earth and Planetary Sciences.
- Develop
skills in critical reading and discussion of scientific texts and papers
- Learn how
to read, critique, and write a scientific abstract
- Learn how
to read, critique, and write a curriculum vitae (academic/scientific resume)
- Expose
students to current research projects of departmental faculty, lecturers, and
researchers
Expectations:
You will be treated as responsible scientific professionals and are expected to offer the same courtesy to the instructor, presenters, and your graduate student colleagues. It is particularly important that you: (1) attend class meetings (or provide notice to the instructor in advance if you must miss a meeting), (2) complete the assigned reading before the class meeting with which the reading is associated, (3) ask questions in class and be willing to offer answers when called upon, even if you are not sure of the correct answer, (4) follow up during office hours with additional questions, (5) turn in assignments when they are due (at the start of class), and (6) cooperate with your class colleagues in discussion and assignments.
