The Flow of Data. At each observation site, raw data sets from the instruments are logged to the memory buffer in a local Compaq iPAQ pocket PC. The data proceed through four steps before they are made available to the public.
1. Gathering Data. The iPAQ transmits the data via the Internet to the stream server at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego.

2. Archive Raw Data. A full copy of the raw (unfiltered and unprocessed) data is loaded into an archive database at SIO.

3. Processing Data. Data are filtered through quality assurance protocols that flag incoming values that fall outside expected ranges. The raw voltage data streams are converted into standard engineering units using relevant instrument calibrations.

4. Serving Data. Processed data (filtered and converted) are automatically loaded the into the primary database server. This database is an Oracle relational database, implemented and administrated at UC Santa Cruz (UCSC). An application server, also at UC Santa Cruz, provides users access to the database.
