Research interests and current projects


My research focuses on ecology of N₂-fixing microorganisms in marine, estuarine, and freshwater environments.
Prior and ongoing projects have investigated/are focusing on environmental controls of distribution and rates of nitrogen fixation, and
taxa- and strain specific functional diversity within microbial communities
I am involved in multi-investigator projects developing functional gene microarray and in situ probe approaches for microbial detection.

Ongoing projects:

• functional gene microarray for detection of diversity and expression of the nifH gene in marine environments
  (NASA-UARC 2005). Collaborative project with Jonathan Zehr.
• microbial mats (Moisander et al. 2006)
• open ocean (Hewson et al. 2007a, Moisander et al. in review)
• estuarine and coastal environments (Moisander et al. 2007, Hewson et al. 2007b)


• assimilatory nitrate reduction in diazotrophic microorganisms (NSF Environmental Biology-Ecology, 2005-2008).
