Seismology, structure of the interior of the Earth, earthquake and explosion source physics, tectonics, wave propagation, mantle dynamics, earthquake forecasting and hazard mitigation.

Thorne Lay is author or co-author of 405 research publications including 1 textbook, 1 monograph, 1 disciplinary book, 1 edited monograph, 280 publications in refereed books and professional journals, and 120 technical reports, book reviews, news items and conference proceedings. In addition, he is author or co-author on 377+ published abstracts for meeting presentations, and he was content consultant for a book on the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.
